1 S U M M A R Y Treating cracks in asphalt pavements is a major part of every maintenance engineer’s work. The objective of any crack treatment is to minimize the intrusion of water into under- lying layers of the pavement structure. Such water infiltrates the base layers of the pavement and may lead to pavement structural failures.

Pavement Crack Sealing In an independent study, sealing cracks in pavement (crack sealing) has proven to be the lowest cost pavement preservation treatment available by far. In asphalt pavements, the next lowest cost pavement preservation treatment is a single chip seal which is approximately a whopping 4 times more expensive.

Crack seal to prevent (1) entry of moisture into the subgrade through the cracks and (2) further raveling of the crack edges. HMA can provide years of satisfactory service after developing small cracks if they are kept sealed (Roberts et. al., 1996). High severity cracks (> 1/2 inch wide and cracks with raveled edges).

The pavement actually expands, making the crack width smaller, cracking and breaking the asphalt along the edge of the joint. By keeping water out, this will eliminate sub-base erosion, reduce freeze-thaw damage and improve ride quality of the pavement to extend its service life.”

Crack seal/fill the cracks to prevent further deterioration or remove and reconstruct to full depth fixing any support issues. 6- Joint Reflection Cracks These are cracks in a flexible pavement overlay of a rigid pavement (i.e., asphalt over concrete). They occur directly over the underlying rigid pavement joints.

Crack sealing and filling. Cracking is an almost inevitable form of damage on asphalt and composite pavements. Sealing cracks is a common technique used as a preventative maintenance treatment. Cracks should be promptly treated to prevent water penetration, which accelerates pavement deterioration and results in potholes or base failures.

Crack sealing can be combined with other preservation treatments, including chip seals, HMA overlays, slurry seals or micro seals. However, the crack seal must cure for a minimum of two weeks before any treatment can be placed overtop. Overbanded crack seals require even longer cure times. Prepare the …
